A Peek Behind the Chair: My Recent Photoshoot at Hair FX Salon in Altoona

Recently, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Stacey St. Ores, the owner of Hair FX salon in Altoona, to learn more about the history of this beloved establishment and gain insights into the world of hairstyling. Here’s what I discovered:

When did Hair FX open? Hair FX opened its doors on March 31, 1998, a deliberate decision by my mom, Anita to avoid April Fools' Day.

Who were the original owners? The salon was founded by Craig and Anita Long.

When did you become the owner? My wife an I took the reins of the salon from my parents on July 1, 2019.

What's the hardest thing about running your own business? One of the toughest challenges is managing a diverse team of stylists, each with their unique personalities and styles. Additionally, determining pricing that reflects the salon's value while ensuring stylists understand their worth can be a delicate balancing act.

What is the most rewarding aspect? For Stacey, the most fulfilling aspect of running Hair FX is the relationships forged with clients over the years. Building trust and rapport with each person who walks through the door brings immense joy and satisfaction.

How many stylists do you currently have? Hair FX boasts a team of ten talented stylists, each dedicated to providing top-notch service to their clients.

Are you taking on new clients? Absolutely! Stacey emphasizes that they are always eager to welcome new clients into their salon family, as it's what keeps their business thriving and evolving.

What advice do you have for aspiring hairstylists? Stacey's advice for high school seniors considering a career in hairstyling is simple yet powerful: believe in yourself and your ability to succeed. She encourages aspiring stylists to follow their passion and work hard to prove any naysayers wrong.

What is your favorite gift from a client? While physical gifts are always appreciated, Stacey finds the greatest gift to be referrals from satisfied clients. However, unexpected gestures of appreciation are also cherished.

Can you share your thoughts on tipping? Tipping is an integral part of a stylist's income, Stacey explains. While it's important for stylists to provide exceptional service, tipping is an ethical practice that acknowledges their hard work and dedication.

What is the correct amount to tip? According to Stacey, the general etiquette for tipping in the hairstyling industry is 20-25% of the service cost, depending on the length of the appointment and the overall experience.

How should clients approach tipping? Stacey encourages clients to view tipping as a standard practice in personalized service industries, not limited to just dining experiences. By tipping generously, clients show appreciation for the skill and effort invested by their stylist.

Hair FX salon in Altoona isn't just a place to get a haircut—it's a community where relationships are nurtured, talent is celebrated, and clients leave feeling confident and refreshed. With a rich history, a dedicated team, and a commitment to excellence, Hair FX continues to be a beacon of style and professionalism in the heart of Altoona.
